Retaliation Revoked in The MLB – Essay 4 Final

MLB needs to Revoke Retaliation

Retaliation has bin an impact to the Major League Baseball for several years. Retaliation is a way of revenge by doing something to the other team because of their actions. But recently it has bin out of control and consequences needs to be enforced. Pitchers have bin throwing pitches to batters up high or even in the low part of there body as a warning to the other team. This leads to retaliation to other team, as the other pitcher will do the same and chaos erupts. The benches will clear and the officiating crew has to take action to resolve the conflict. My question is this, why doesn’t the league give out harsh punishments for pitches to the head? The MLB has only fined pitchers and giving them a small suspension. This is a very serious issue that needs to be resolved! Batters have bin severely injured from this issue and where some have to end there career because of this tragic controversy. But Kurjian believes retaliation should be allowed due to the fact that the players are trying to protect one another by the opponents actions. Retaliation needs to be revoked in the MLB due to the fact that it is causing a unsafe environment during the game due to the fact its causing too many injuries such as concussions or even brain trauma.

A recent conflict of retaliation has occurred when the Boston Red Sox faced the Baltimore Orioles in Baltimore. Third baseman Manny Machado illegally slide to second base and injured Red Sox star Dustin Pedoria for a couple days. The Red Sox retaliated on the next day when Matt Barnes purposely threw a high fast ball to the head of Machado. This is the wrong way to retaliate in baseball. Throwing a fastball to a defensive batter to the head is wrong due to that fact it could severely injured him permanently. Barnes was only suspended four games which is shocking! This suspension should be longer to discipline the pitcher’s actions. However this situation went on for numerous days as the Red Sox still continued to retaliate by attempting to hit Machado in Boston.  On May 1, Machado’s post game stated “They’re still thinking the slide that I did when I had no intention of hurting anybody,’’ Machado said. “And I’m still trying to get hit at. Thrown at my (expletive) head. (Expletive) thrown at everywhere. MLB should do something about it. (Expletive) pitchers go out there with their (expletive) balls in their hand and throwing 100 mph trying to hit people. I got a (expletive) bat too. I can go up there and crush somebody if I wanted to, but you know what, I’ll get suspended for the year and the pitcher will only get suspended for two games”(qtd. Nihtengale).

Retaliation in the MLB has become a bit of a hot topic in the recent years. But the way these players handle it, is becoming dangerous.  Batters have gotten pitched to the head and are usually diagnosed with concussions. This situation with the concussion protocol can take a long time for the batters to play again. By law no athlete cannot perform any sport activity until cleared of the protocol.  This incident can lead to brain trauma from pitches to the head. This conflict can take weeks, months, or even years to recover from the injury but sometimes the brain could become permanently damaged an have no choice to retire for their safety. Retaliation is unfortunately  not a rule to follow in the MLB policy which is truly unacceptable. The MLB can only just give harsh consequences by ejecting the players and giving them small suspensions.  Retaliation is no a everyday affair in the MLB, we never know when retaliation can occur. But we can determine when retaliation when a pitcher doesn’t like what batters does after at bat or even if a pitcher is frustrated with he game.  This can lead to the beginning of retaliation. I wonder why it is “ok” to throw a 90 mph fastball at a batter and possibly injuring him to prove a point.  At the end of the day we all know that we don’t know where the ball will go at any point when the pitchers throws it. But when conflicts has happened prior before hitting a batter, its a bit clearer that it is a sign of “payback”.

A famous baseball from the Boson Red Sox named Tony Conigliaro was struck in the face by Jack Hamilton which led to a dislocation to his jaw, crack left cheekbone and damaged his retina in his left eye. The writer states that Tony was losing his eye vision the next fours after this conflict(Silva). After returning 4 years later, the game he loved Tony played for 21 gamed and was playing DH. This lead him to retire at an early age because of a horrific tragic one day. Eight years later, at the  age of 45 Tony Conigliaro passed away in a coma. This pitch to the head gives proof of how dangerous pitchers can retaliate and could end careers or even lives. Tony;s death will never be forgotten in the MLB; as one pitch changed his life forever.

To clarify on retaliation in the MLB [Fielder] points out that throwing a ball at a batter that is 90 mph or faster is assault”It’s only between the foul lines that a violent felony is instead viewed as enforcing the game’s unwritten rules. But that’s the biggest problem in stopping such assaults. Batters are being targeted by pitchers an could be severely injured and where it can become an assault.  Nobody can agree on what the game’s unwritten rules are—presumably because they’re not codified and are thus subject to the whims of the various players and managers interpreting them that day.” [Fielder] points out that pitchers are enforced to do this by there head coach due to the fact the other team had offended them. This however becomes a war on the field with the pitchers hitting the opposing batter and where retaliation is considered to be an unwritten rule.

(Kurkjian) points out that retaliation is good to have in the MLB.  Players need to retaliate through pitchers to hit the batters because of the batters actions before. Pitchers are usually told to hit a certain player or even a innocent player at the opposing team to prove a point. (Kurkjian) states that players sometimes wait for years to retaliate to a certain player because of there actions years ago. “The first pitch in batting practice, Farmer hit Gross right in the middle of the back with a fastball at 90 mph.”

“What was that for!” Gross screamed at Farmer.

“That was for three years ago!” Farmer yelled at Gross.

“OK,” Gross said.

Usually when a pitcher has hit the opposing batter at least once, they feel like there even and everything is fine. Retaliation makes this sport very interesting when pitchers retaliate and also fans enjoy it when both teams clear the benches due to the actions that occurred. Pitchers unusually retaliate with the first batter they pitch t after there teammate was struck. The pitcher wants to send a message to the other team and wanting to be even with the other team after the conflict.  But it just leads to chaos because the other team will retaliate due to that which forms a chain in the game.

In conclusion to this topic, will next year be the year the MLB organization to do something about this? A long suspension when hitting the batter up high and banning retaliation  should be the solution to this topic. The MLB needs to protect there batters when approaching to the batters box. I understand that pitchers retaliate when there own teammates get hurt through illegal slides,  pitches, or even being taunted by the opposing teammate. But let the committee handle the situation off the field with consequences and not allow pitchers to retaliate. Retaliation in the MLB becomes an assault in the game when pitchers hit batters as a sign of “payback”. With retaliation revoked in the MLB, the batters and other players will be a bit more safer and not targeted by pitchers.

The Rays should of never hit Jeter period! You were up 6-1 in the 8th inning and I completely agree why the Yankees retaliated in the bottom of the 8th inning. This video is how I think retaliation should be allowed in the MLB. Pitchers should not throw at batters in the head or up high. Throwing at the batters in the body area is still wrong though but less likely to get severely hurt if thrown up high.

This was by far such a dirty block to a defenseless defender. The play wasn’t going towards their direction and the receiver should of stopped and also it was extremely late when he chop blocked him. What surprised me the most was their wasn’t an ejection from this illegal block. Talib’s actions the next play was understandable but in the process he cost the team a penalty and possible a fine. Playing fire with fire is simply wrong to do because usually you will get the same treatment by being penalized and even fined for retaliating.

Talk about a cheap shot by Orpik.  He completely took Erikson who didn’t return and  is smaller then him. Thortons hit and wanting to fight was really understandable. Thorton was just trying to protect his teammate after he got hurt and it was wrong for a big man to hit someone who is smaller then him. But what was uncalled for was definitely the cheap shot when the play was over.  Thorton going to Orpik an putting him down and throwing a couple of punches.

Rabin’s cheap shot after the play was uncalled for. That was bound to happen when he was hit and his teammates retaliated by pushing the opposing teammate on the floor. I don’t really see nothing wrong with this retaliation. No one got severely hurt which is good. But Rabin’s teammate, after the fight was over should never pushed hit the player again as it costed his team a penalty. Sometimes its not worth to retaliate in any sport because at the end of the day your gonna punish yourself with either a penalty, fine or even ejected.

This was the most recent conflict in the MLB with retaliation. For a week everyone has bin talking about Machado’s illegal slide that injured Pedroia  and the way Boston Red Sox retaliated. While I was observing the slide, Manny didn’t seem to purposely injure Pedroia. He was trying to keep him up when slid right to his ankle when he went over the base. The way Boston retaliated was truly unacceptable , dangerous , and just simply wrong. Red Sox pitcher Barnes threw a high fastball to the head of Manny was dangerous. This could of severely injured him with brain trauma or a concussion. Suspending Barnes was the right move but should of bin a longer suspension. The next conflict with Sale throwing low at Machado was still uncalled for. Once was fine with hitting the batter to prove a point, but you need to let things go. Manny’s frustration in his press conference was very reasonable but maybe less profanity would of bin better.

This was definitely a unprofessional  move by both players. I player pinching another player was very childish but the way Draymond Green retaliated with a hard punch to the weak wrist to Harden on the court was simply wrong. But what angered me about it was when Green approached the ref to ask why he got a foul. Your not suppose to punch anybody and usually the refs would give a flagrant foul or even a ejection.

As a captain for your team, it was the right thing to do when your teammate went down by an illegal check. Even though Chara is bigger and taller he retaliated by going after the player and fighting him. In any sport teammates back up one another and for Chara’s actions it was honestly the right thing he did. He wanted to prove a point by sending a message to the opposing team to not mess with teammates.  There is usually that one person on every team that does retaliation when their teammate goes down or gets picked on.

You did do well with re wording in the summary. The summary could be a bit more detailed and longer , using quotes in the text to show the argument it bit more clearer.
Try writing in the the summary who published it in the beginning of the summary. Maybe try summarizing the key points in each paragraph and using it when revising the summary.

Essay four Topic Proposal

Two Topics-

Should the NFL start suspending players for illegal hits instead  of large finds?

Should the MLB start suspending and removing pitchers during the game with pitches to the head?

Watching these situations happen on live television has concerned fans , families, and the whole committee. The NFL has started to take action with this situation but how do people feel about it? Some players think it is good to do this but some think that it is taking the fun out of the way tackles turn out. In today so many flags were issued for illegal hits and quite a few of them were not bad. This has frustrated players because we don’t know whats a bad hit or a clean hit these days. When I watch these games I questioned myself with certain hits and they just get flagged” Why doesn’t he get ejected or suspended!”

In the MLB pitchers throw pitches and some hit the players to the head or even the face. Should they be suspended. This could be a yes or no situation. Pitchers do have the ability to control every pitch before the way they throw the ball by the direction. But yes , sometimes pitches do miss the plate and hit the batter not intentionally. But most of these hits do come in payback when it comes to rivalries. Pitchers love to send a message to other team as a warning. But soon it turns to a consistency to both teams and the umpires have to take action. With this situation should the MLB start taking action with minor suspension and if it continues then long suspensions?

Images can be easily issued for either topic. I have done research on these  sports for years since I love to watch it.  All the Images will be descriptive to the topic that is being issued.

Will pitchers be suspended for hitting batters?

The Olympics Show Why College Sports Should Give Up on Amateurism

Introduction:

The NCAA (National College Athletic Association) is the government that manages the whole athletic committee across the United States. This government helps maintain all athletes to follow a specific policy that has been established for centuries. The NCAA has used the policy called Amateurism. Amateurism is a set of rules to follow for all athletes to not do. The main goal of this policy is” to ensure the students’ priority remains on obtaining a quality educational experience and that all of student-athletes are competing equitably.” Some rules are issued in this article and they are “Salary for participating in athletes”. This rule refers to all athletes to not be paid as a job in the NCAA. The second rule is “Prize money above actual and necessary expenses” This rule is to ban all athletes to receive any type of revenue from sponsorships, earnings from events. The last rule that is issued in the article is “Delayed initial full- time collegiate enrollment to participate in organized sports competition.”  This refers to all athletes to not delay any academic curriculum in order to go to a sporting event. These rules established by the [NCAA] help all athletes to maintain competitiveness equally and to make sure they obtain a quality educational experience. This policy enforces all athletes to follow this policy and cannot break any rule or consequences will be enforced. This article “The Olympics Show Why College Sports Should Give Up on Amateurism” is persuading the NCAA to revoke this policy.

Summary:

This article is written by Patrick Hruby on [July 25, 2012] and this discusses how the NCAA should remove the Amateurism policy. The Amateurism is when student’s priority is education first and athletes second. In [1960] the Olympics had this policy “no pay-play” but revoked it for all the participants. Patrick states that there should be nothing wrong with people playing sports for living rather than getting an education.  Amateurism has created problems across the NCAA such as not allowing free things. For an example Ohio State has banned all football players to receive free tattoos but gives them free tuition, books, board, and while Ivy League school can’t even receive athletic scholarships.   In 1960 The Olympics participants who decided to go pro stated they have committed a crime. Playing for sports for a living and getting paid for it breaks the Amateurism policy. Amateurism in Olympics and NCAA had originally come from Victorian England. During the time that being a gentlemen is someone who didn’t work and only did sports as a hobby. According to today‘s Amateurism, the system had “less to do with high-minded ideas about education than about enforcing a social caste system”.

In Today’s Amateurism, some players had taken bribes to make money from others such as money handshakes from the program, being recruited, or even after the game. The Olympics allowed the participants to get paid as they didn’t pay them. The NCAA should not pay their players to a market due to the fact it would make a greatly loss to the NCAA’s federal tax exempt status and loss of some sports such as volleyball or tennis, But they should allow the NCAA star players and coaches to make profit through sponsorships such as appearing in commercials, cover of video games, shoe companies, and there image across America. This would help grow and share the wealth with one another.  But today The NCAA president Mark Emmert thinks if athletes got paid like professors do they would be careless with the money and become unsuccessful. But Patrick believes a student athlete can be a good person and be successful even though being paid in college.

Stephan Harris indicates that pro’s should not be allowed to participate in the Olympics because it “Takes the fun out of it”. [Hruby] over rules this as the people love to see the pro’s at the Olympics as they greet them as rock stars. Andy Schwarz points out “The biggest lesson of the Olympics is that you shouldn’t listen when somebody says we wouldn’t compensate the talent,” People don’t care about the money these stars earn but rather to see them compete in action. In the NCAA the fans love to see their school play at high levels. [Hruby] says “Eliminate amateurism tomorrow, and big-time college football and basketball fans won’t desert en masse; if anything, they might like NCAA sports more, given that hypocrisy and corruption will no longer be core components of the exercise.”

College Athletes still need to be connected to the college mission which is to prepare all educationally to lead them to be successful in life. But today there not a 100% of graduate rate.  Ellen Staurowsky states that the college product is connected to the locale and players would care about their teams rather there amateur or profession. The NCAA fears that the system would diminish if they withdraw the policy and pay their athletes but as of today there holding onto the policy.

Response:

Despite the Olympics leaving the Amateurism Policy, the NCAA shouldn’t do the same. College students who are athletes shouldn’t be paid to play their sport no matter how talented you are. When entering college your priority is to do well in your academic career and then your sport career.  College prepares us students to become successful in the future academically. Most athletes don’t make it to the pros and they are in a tight spot. Some of the athletes expect to go pro and don’t care as much in the academic curriculum but later on some fail. But I think if you’re talented in sports and you do well, then playing sports for living shouldn’t be an issue. Studying academically but playing sports and decide to do that for a living is fine. Your academic career learning is a great back up when you need to work for a living if sports doesn’t work out. In the end you should do what you want for a living if you like it.

Players should be allowed to take any money that’s offered such as sponsorships rather than just being offered by the school. Most schools tend to give scholarships to the athletes but some of them don’t get a full paid scholarship. As a result some athletes would take bribes or sell prized items given by the school to pay off the debts. Athletes are just finding a way to pay off their debts.  What I do agree with this policy is that athletes shouldn’t be paid to play the sport in the college sport. I don’t agree on [Emmert] stating that “I believes a student athlete can be a good person and be successful even though being paid in college.” Giving all athletes money to play will result in great loss in the NCAA financially. This will result in removing courses and relieving teacher’s duties in order to save money.

Today’s world no school always have 100% graduate rate and you can’t blame that on sports. [Staurowsky] believes that “the college product is connected to the locale and players would care about their teams rather there amateur or profession.” Some people decide to drop out of school to further on their life then receiving a degree or even decide to leave school and go pro. If students are talented in sports, they should take the shot by attempting pro even though they aren’t a senior. Some fail and some don’t by going pro but it can be lessons learn in life. For an example, College basketball athletes have talented players who are freshman or sophomores and declare the draft.  These athletes are usually an impact to the teams and become successful. In the end, the NCAA should hold the Amateurism policy to a certain extent.

Summary : The Olympics Show why College Sports should Give Up on Amateurism

This article is written by Patrick Hruby on July 25, 2012 and this discusses how the NCAA should remove the Amateurism policy. The Amateurism is when student’s priority is education first and athletes second. There are many requirements when being amateur you are not allowed to:”

  • Contracts with professional teams
  • Salary for participating in athletics
  • Prize money above actual and necessary expenses
  • Play with professionals
  • Tryouts, practice or competition with a professional team
  • Benefits from an agent or prospective agent
  • Agreement to be represented by an agent

But Patrick believes a student athlete can be a good person and be successful even though being paid in college.

Stephan Harris indicates that pro’s should not be allowed to participate in the Olympics because it “Takes the fun out of it”. Patrick over rules this as the people love to see the pro’s at the Olympics as they greet them as rock stars. Patrick says “Eliminate amateurism tomorrow, and big-time college football and basketball fans won’t desert en masse; if anything, they might like NCAA sports more, given that hypocrisy and corruption will no longer be core components of the exercise.”

Love for Soccer

It was a bright early cold morning when I arrived at the RSR Soccer Center located in New Bedford. The two teams arrived at the field warming up with stretches, and passing the soccer ball.  My brother Robert is non Portuguese who plays for the black team and he has been playing soccer since high school. This gathering activity changed the way Robert played with the others. All the players were Portuguese and they are friends with one another off the field but they play a friendly competitive game. The Portuguese culture play’s a lot of soccer with one another, and to continue it some of the people played every Sunday during the winter until summer leagues started. The cool part about this experience was I was able to observe on the bench while watching and I was the only person in the audience.  This activity is a way to form a community with one another in the Portuguese culture.

This soccer game always occurs every Sunday morning at around 7-7:30. The field was very small with no nets and a net on the ceiling so that it will not hit any pipes up top. The field was made of turf and it was really rough and not slippery. On one side of the field there was a bench area for both teams to rest and the other side had a glass board for friends and families to observe. One team wears a black shirt while the other team wears a yellow or green shirt.  I saw all the players changing their shoes with cleats, putting protective shin guards or ankle wrapping if they want, and some of them had to change their pants or shirts. A lot of the players on the two teams are a lot older and not young. This impressed me that they continue to play soccer, because a lot of them are in good shape and are so competitive. The players would run so quick back and forth with the ball and doing skillful moves. A lot of the older men have tough jobs outside such as construction, landscaping and working for the city. During the game I noticed that the yellow team had a lot more players to play and it became easier to substitute players, while the black team didn’t have a lot of players which meant that most players had to play for numerous minutes. These players on the field are so passionate in this sport, so they play aggressive but off the field there respectful to one another. My brother Robert who is on the black team said “a lot of people sometimes don’t show up on our, and some of the other players on the yellow team come to our side for the game.”

The indoor game is a five on five for an hour and a half with substitutions. The players can make their own substitutions by telling the other players to switch when they get tired.  This game had no referees or coaches and can call their own fouls. The game was a very quick fast pace every minute. There were so many passes back an fourth and I couldn’t keep my eye on the ball. The score was extremely high but no one didn’t care who won or loss because all they cared about was having fun. During the game there were a few collisions when approaching ball but no one got hurt. Some of the players were sliding to kick the ball away from the net so the other team wouldn’t score. Halfway into the game the ball went out of bounce to my side of the bench and almost hit me. I said to myself “Wow these guys play hard and aggressive out there.” The players on the bench were speaking mostly Portuguese and some English but it was hard for me to understand but some moments they were all laughing with one another. The players on the field were talking to the bench players during the game by saying jokes and the way there were playing.

Robert is a very young competitive player who has fun playing soccer. He has continued to play soccer after high school to be active and to have fun playing the sport with his friends. He loves the soccer so much that he plans on playing for the rest of his life. My brother has battle through several injuries that he told me that impacted his life. Two years ago he had a severe ankle sprain that couldn’t let him play for months. During a game he was playing, one of the new players on the other team “hacked” him which is when a player slides into another person’s leg. “The game can be very aggressive on the field but off the field everyone is friendly and respectful” said Robert. Last year he suffered another injury on the same field but different game; my brother slid to force the ball out of bounds and gave himself a turf burn which made his knee cap bleed and had to go the ER. This affected off the field and on the field with soccer and work. But my brother didn’t stop playing even though he had these crazy injuries. My brother wears a brace for his ankle and also uses tape around the brace so he does not injure his ankle again.

High school soccer made every player play there hardest out every game to win while this indoor game is still competitive but isn’t worth anything. In high school signals was always made every time to pass with words such as “A”, “Yo yo” or even waiving your hand up to get your teammates attention. While I was observing everyone was speaking Portuguese which was hard for me to understand.  The others players welcomed him into their culture with the way they play soccer. He would change his play style and interaction to fit with them such as playing the game fast past. The players would mainly speak Portuguese in the game; which forced Robert to adjust himself with their language by understanding the meanings of the words that are being spoken in the game. Some words that were spoken was “fica” (stay), “pass aqui” (pass it here), “calma” (relax), “abra” (open) and “shoota” (shoot). He told me it took some time to adjust with their play style in the beginning with quick passes and communicating, but now he is very good in the game today.  Robert told me that playing with these guys is a lot of fun and not pressured then he was in high school. In high school he told me “I played with Portuguese kids but more pressure to do well and being competitive.” Today Robert is not pressured, and is just having fun with the older guys.

When the game was over everyone shook each other’s hand and also mine when I was observing on the bench. When I was about to leave, everyone was having some food while taking their gear off. Usually after they leave they all meet up to a place such as a bar, restaurant, or a person’s house to eat, drink, and talk. Being around one another by hanging out or doing activity is a good way to show your sub culture. This gathering after a fun competitive game forms a sense of community with one another. This whole experience was amazing when watching my brother play on the field with others. It was awesome to observe this scenery on the bench and also going onto the field to pass the soccer ball to the players. Indoor soccer is very different to regular soccer with different rules, regulations, and how everyone acts to each other.

Peer Review Chris

The essay was very detailed of how you seen multiple inmates interacting with their families. I was thinking maybe you could right the location of the prison you attended and the colors of the prison inside and outside.  Did you go anywhere else in the prison or just stood in one specific location? Was there anything you asked to your cousin in the prison that you could right? The whole body to this essay gave me clear images of how the process was of entering the prison till you left. The scenery of the cafeteria was pretty clear with vending machines, and long tables where everyone sat down. When you were there was there security guards watching if so where? Do the other inmates who have no visitors coming go in a different location when visitors visits inmates?  The subculture is pretty clear of how the life is with the inmates but I couldn’t understand the main idea was. Was it how some inmates change they way there in the prison and the others continue to be violent.  The structure to this essay was very step by step in the beginning when entering the prison and then approaching your cousin while seeing the other inmates. You gave good points of view of how you felt in the prison.

Mark tells us how teens shouldn’t play competitive and should just have fun. The teens push themselves to go reach the next level such as varsity , college, and professional but most of them fail. Teens do not play for pride or passion but to win and receive rewards.

Buzz thinks sports should continue in teen level but not to be too big. High school sports compete to show there talent to the higher level and to become superior. Some teams for high school are watched world wide across the country for what? Also so high schools spends enormous money to repair or build stadiums . ” $2-$60 million” High school sports should not act like college level or professional level. Buzz wants to eliminate the competitiveness in high school sports.
